The UCC was founded in 1957 as the union of four differing protestant Christian traditions, with even more having joined us since then. From the very beginning of our history, we were a church that affirmed the ideal that Christians did not always have to agree to live together in communion. Our motto — "That They May All Be One"— comes from the prayer of Jesus for the unity of the church (John 17:21). The UCC is one of the most inclusive and diverse protestant Christian denominations within the United States.
We look for the Word of God our Creator within the Hebrew and Christian scriptures, in the person and work of Jesus the Christ, and we seek guidance through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, as we engage in God's creative, redemptive and empowering work in the world. One of the UCC's distinguishing characteristics is our understanding that -- "God is still speaking," We believe that God is always speaking each of us in a tender, encouraging voice; as well as to the entire world, prompting all of us, in our distinctive times, to stand up and be counted for the sake of the prophetic gospel of Jesus, our Christ.
While we receive so many gifts of tradition from our ecumenical and inter-faith partners, the United Church of Christ also tends to be on the very frontier of change, thereby sharing the lead with our sisters and brothers in faith. This stems from our full embrace of our Biblically-based prophetic heritage, the very same heritage that Jesus embraced and made so completely manifest throughtout his life and work. Our dialogue of intelligence and our strong affirmation of independence has lead to the United Church of Christ and its 1.2 million members being described as a “heady and exasperating mix.” The UCC is a mostly progressive denomination that unabashedly engages heart, mind, soul and spirit. We strive to atttain a balance of congregational autonomy with a strong commitment to unity among our nearly 5,600 congregations. We are known to embrace wide differences of both perspective and practice among our many local congregations. We invite you to come join us!
